  • Can a new teacher / education student get special grants to pay off college loans in exchange for teaching?

Posted by admin on August 29th, 2009 and filed under college grants and loans | 3 Comments »

I know that teachers are hard to find in some states. Are there any that offer to pay off tuition in exchange for teaching for a certain amount of years? Or, are there any programs that might offer a similar service? I know peace corps and americorps offer a benefit like this.

Check with the agency that issued your loan. Many times they will cancel a precentage of your loan if you teach in a public school that is deemed to be a critical needs school. This is exactly what happened for me many years ago and I teach in Mississippi. This is my 25th year of teaching.
You may want to look into TeachAmerica, I think they offer a similar benefit.

There is a program called Teach America. You agree to teach in an inner city school for two years, and part of your tuition loans are forgiven.

MSN recently had a series of articles about ways to reduce your college loans. It’s worth looking to see if they are still available to read.

If not call the State Board of Ed., ask your local teachers’ union, or the town where you teach if they have any information about other programs.

Teach for America and per state needs for special areas which are underserved by certified professionals (in NC, it is Science and Math secondary and special ed).
