If you budget right is it at all possible to just use grants and financial aid from fafsa or do people have to take out these huge loans to afford college?
Well, you can only use grants if you qualify for them (usually around the poverty level or below). Some individuals get scholarships that help reduce the cost of school, or get full scholarships that cover the total cost. In addition, some attend community college and pay out-of-pocket and then transfer to a lower-cost 4-year (in-state) public university. People who take out huge loans are being ridiculous in my opinion (with the exception with some professional degrees). You just have to choose a school you can afford. You could go to school for $8,000/year or $60,000/year depending on the school you choose.
If you choose an affordable school, and don’t take refunds on loans for stupid stuff or living expenses (that’s what a job is for), then you won’t find yourself overwhelmed in debt.
